Families and youth gathered in the village of Tochanonga for a meaningful Acorn Gathering event that celebrated culture, learning, and community. Participants came together to learn how to identify, gather, and responsibly collect acorns, just as generations before them have done. Elders and educators shared knowledge about the importance of acorns as a traditional food source, guiding families through the steps of processing them and explaining their cultural significance. The hands-on experience allowed youth to connect directly with the land while learning practical skills rooted in tradition.
We were also proud to partner with the Natural History Museum, whose team enriched the day with interactive environmental education. Museum educators led engaging bird-watching activities, teaching youth how to observe local wildlife, identify bird species, and understand their habitats. Through these activities, families gained a deeper appreciation for the natural world surrounding Tochanonga, making the event not only a cultural gathering but also an opportunity to foster environmental awareness and stewardship among our next generation.
