The Day at the Rocks event, hosted by Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation, brought together youth, families, and community partners for a meaningful celebration of culture, creativity, and learning. Set within a culturally significant landscape, the event created an engaging space for participants to connect with Indigenous history. ECLD supported the event by facilitating arts and crafts activities that blended creativity with cultural learning. Youth created animal headbands inspired by local wildlife and animal-themed buttons featuring Tataviam language translations. These activities encouraged self-expression, introduced language preservation, and sparked conversations about respect for the land.

ECLD also led a cultural hike through the village of Mapipinga, where participants learned about traditional practices, village life, and the Tataviam people’s enduring connection to their homeland. Experiencing the landscape through a cultural lens deepened participants’ understanding of the site’s significance. The event was further enriched by the presence of respected Elders who shared stories and cultural artifacts. Elder Dennis Garcia led a youth story circle, while Elder Ted Garcia provided hands-on learning through traditional items. Overall, the event successfully honored culture, strengthened community connections, and created lasting educational experiences for youth and families.
