During the months of February and March, our Indigenous Recipe Programs offered participants hands-on opportunities to strengthen their culinary skills while honoring Indigenous food traditions. The program focused on preparing nourishing, culturally rooted dishes that emphasized seasonal ingredients and ancestral food knowledge.

Participants demonstrated their culinary abilities through the preparation of winter squash with black beans and yucca soup. These dishes highlighted the importance of traditional staple ingredients valued for their nutrition, versatility, and connection to the land. Guided cooking sessions supported participants in learning preparation techniques, seasoning, and safe cooking practices while encouraging creativity and collaboration.

The yucca soup activity introduced participants to the cultural significance of root vegetables within Indigenous communities. Participants practiced essential kitchen skills such as chopping, measuring, and simmering while gaining a deeper understanding of yucca’s nutritional benefits and historical use. Throughout the program, participants showed increased confidence in the kitchen and a growing sense of pride in their accomplishments.

By engaging in these shared cooking experiences, participants strengthened their relationship to Indigenous culinary traditions and reinforced food as a source of healing, resilience, and community. The Indigenous Recipe Programs continue to provide meaningful spaces for learning, cultural connection, and skill-building through storytelling and food.
